I still just want to be under the influence.

Who are/were your influences?

JD: I’m not even sure what that means. We take in what we take in, continually, and something(s) come out (continually) – everyone, everywhere, everytime influences us. Some of the intakes and outflows repeat (and vary) somehow – some more than others – the more the intakes repeat, the more they influence. We bank/bounce off of them. It’s not a simple question. It’s like pebbles or raindrops on a liquid surface – it all seems like a big deal if you focus on the NOW and the SURFACE, but the NOW is always changing and the SURFACE is just an illusion.

Ok, so who are/were your influences?…or, more simply, which artists are/were an influence?

JD: Aren’t we all artists?

Yeah, sure, please though, some kind of answer?

JD: Here’s a self-portrait (above), it’s from Summer 2004 (geez, 5 years ago already). I was in my studio in grad school, almost done. I invited the school’s art gallery director to my studio. Based on our talking, him being in my studio, him hearing my plans for the final show, he thought I might like seeing his copy of the catalog from John Cage’s show “Rolywholyover, A Circus”. He, kindly, loaned in to me. I shot myself in it (above).

So, the Influence(s) List will start with him: John Cage.
